This past summer, Megan and I lead a team of sixteen people on a missions trip to the Dominican Republic. We went through an organization called Students International. Students International is a missions organization that specializes in occupational ministries. The have a variety of sites such as medical, social work, education, boys and girls sports, micro-finance, etc. During our missions trip Megan and I both felt like it was more of a trip back home than a temporary trip out of the country. While we were there, Brian, the director, was talking to me about how they were looking for an American guy to partner with Raul, leader of the boys sports site. This immediately grabbed my attention. I had worked with Raul for a summer on a ten week internship in 2008, so I had an idea about what this job entailed. Megan and I have spent a lot of time in prayer and conversations with friends and family. We have seen God's direction leading us back to the Dominican Republic to join the Students International team.
At the boys sports site, we use baseball, by far the most popular sport in the DR, to be able to spread the word of God and minister to the boys in a variety of communities. The boys that come to practice will range in age anywhere from 8 to 18. A lot of the boys grow up without father figures, so this gives us a great opportunity to fill that void in their lives and teach them about their Heavenly Father. On the field we will coach them to help them improve their baseball skills while also teaching them values such as discipline, respect and hard work. At the end of each practice session we have a time where we sit and have devotions with the group. For a lot of these boys, this could be the only time they get to learn about God and His love.
